Education in Assam

Assam has an impressive track record with education. As per the Census Report of 2011, its literacy rate is 73.18% with the urban areas showing a higher percentage at 88.88%, and the rural areas with 70.44%. Statistically, males and females have a discrepancy in their literacy rates, but still the urban females at 67.27% are much higher than the all India female literacy rate (65.46%).

The education system in Assam is categorized into school education and college or university education. The Government of Assam handles the major part of the education; however, there are schools and colleges that are run by private concerns and famous educationists in the state. The institutions under the state government follow a state centric syllabus. The private educational concerns have their own syllabus, administration and fee structure. Assamese is the medium of instruction in the state run schools, whereas English is preferred as the medium of instruction in the private ones and the colleges and universities.

Primary education in Assam

Being part of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (Mission for the Education for All), initiated by the Central Government, the state provides free compulsory elementary education to children of the ages of 6 to 14 (Class I to VII). Under this initiative, students are provided with study material, uniforms and even mid day meals. Since the year 2002, the percentage of students out of school has decreased remarkably from 24.39%, in 2002, to 3.56%, in 2009.

State run public, self financed private as well as government aided schools offer quality education to children in the cities and towns of Assam. Most of the schools follow the state’s education and examination board. Higher secondary education is also imparted in colleges such as Gurucharan College, Dimoria College, CKB Commerce College and Kalongpar Vidyapith.

There is a Women’s College in Tinsukia that offers junior college and vocational courses as well. These vocational courses include tourism and travel management, food and nutrition, fashion designing, Tally 7.2, Office XP, DCA and Spoken and Functional English, which require a higher secondary education. Courses such as Beautician (Basic and Advance) and Internet does not require any formal education. Pre primary and primary school training, and journalism and mass communication courses require a graduation. All these courses are of short durations of less than or equal to one year.

Graduation and PG level courses in Assam

Assam takes its higher education seriously. It is no wonder that the subjects covered in the universities are diverse. Several private, government and government sponsored private institutions have been newly set up, along with the older ones, to enhance the level of professional courses taught in the state in both the technical and non-technical subjects. These new developments include an engineering college (third in Assam), polytechnic college in Diphu, new Gauhati Univesity campus at Kokrajhar and the introduction of an integrated five-year law course at the Government Law College in the state’s capital, Guwahati.

For the 3-year graduation courses the candidates need to have passed the higher secondary examination as it is prevalent in other states. Admission to the colleges is, therefore, based on merit in terms of board exam marks. Students can find both general and major degree courses in the graduation level. There are compulsory subjects of English and a second language (Assamese, Bengali and Alternative English), and environmental studies that needs to be taken along with the subjects of the students’ choice.

Education for non resident students in Assam

Students staying in another northeastern state other than Assam can take the advantage of reserved seats, which most educational institutions provide. The non-residents students can apply in the general quota.

Education for Foreign students in Assam

Foreign students can directly apply at the university they choose. For instance, if you want to study engineering in Assam, you do not have to give the Joint Admission Test. You need to apply to the engineering college.

Hostels and accommodation in Assam

Non-resident and foreign students can avail of the hostels in the universities of Gauhati, Dibrugarh, Assam and Tezpur. Many of the professional colleges offer resident courses in which the students have to stay in campus while the course is in session. The hostels are separate for the boys and girls.
