University education in Bangladesh is given through three different types of institutes; universities in Bangladesh are categorized into three types – the public university that is owned by the government and subsidized, the private university that is owned by private sectors and the international university that is funded and controlled by organizations like the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Every university of Bangladesh, irrespective of its ownership, is affiliated to the University Grants Commission. There are over 32 public universities in Bangladesh and 45 institutes under the ownership of private units or individuals. Though the universities in Bangladesh accept applications from resident and international students each year, there are several complaints against the administration and infrastructure in these higher education institutes in the country. Reports claim that due to less number of seats in public universities of Bangladesh, the cost of education rises and hence the number of enrollments each year is less. In fact, for residents, postgraduate education is limited, as private institutes can also not fill the void on account of shortage of full time teaching staff.
This however cannot be said about the universities located in the Dhaka division of Bangladesh. The capital city of Bangladesh accepts application forms from international students who migrate to the country to study courses in different fields of study from humanities to business and science and professional programs. 12 government universities of Bangladesh are located in the city of Dhaka. A larger percentage of private universities of Bangladesh are also located in Dhaka.
