The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), initially known as the University of Cochin, was established in the year 1971 in Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, as per an Act of the Legislature of Government of Kerala. It is a government owned self-governing university in the country and was restructured into Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in 1986.
At present, the institute has been offering immense opportunities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students can also pursue advanced research in social sciences, applied science, management, commerce, industry and technology. In general, the university conducts an All India Entrance Examination named as the Common Admission Test (CAT) for admission to UG and PG programs. There are, however, a few PG courses which need students to clear the Departmental Admission Tests (DAT). According to the enrollment record, around 2,000 aspirants take admission each year and are awarded degrees in engineering and allied subjects at different levels. The university has 3 campuses (2 in Kochi and 1 in Kuttanad, Alappuzha) to accommodate the huge number of scholars.
Faculties On Various Fields
CUSAT has a total of 29 departments providing excellent opportunities of study as well as research work across a wide range of disciplines. There are 9 faculties in the university including law, science, humanities, technology, environmental studies, marine sciences, engineering, medical sciences and technology and social sciences. The department of technology has 4 strong and useful research laboratories to offer the best possible support to the students.
Centre of Excellence in Lasers and Optoelectronic Sciences (CELOS)
In July 2002, the university came up with a segment named Centre of Excellence in Lasers and Optoelectronic Sciences (CELOS). The purpose of this division is to conduct manpower training in Photonics and other interrelated fields. All functions and activities of this segment are administered by the Department of Physics and Department of Electronics. A student can pursue a 5-year integrated M.Sc degree course in Photonics through CELOS.
