Dentistry is a medical subspecialty and the duration of its study is 5 years that also includes a year of internship. The history of dentistry in India dates back to 1928 when Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed established the first dental college in Asia, in the city of Calcutta. Since then dental colleges in India have grown in not only the number but also the variety of dental related fields and specializations. The Dental Council of India regulates these colleges that are located in several parts of the country. It is interesting to note that the Indian youth prefer the BDS (Bachelors in Dental Sciences) course due to its worldwide career prospects. After BDS, students can opt for further specializations in their post-graduation or start practicing.
