The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) in New Delhi is part of an intergovernmental and autonomous organization in the United Nations. In the year 1983, during a Plenipotentiary Meeting in Madrid, 26 member nations signed an international treaty to create a scientific research institution of high standard that would help the developing countries. This center in New Delhi is spread across 10,000 sq m and has research facilities in numerous fields including agriculture, drug development, virology, immunology, malaria and structural biology. ICGEB not only provides a research environment for Ph.D. students and research scientists, it also offers courses on several fields such as Bioinformatics and Biosafety.
