The Directorate of Distance Education of the West Bengal Education Ministry controls and oversees the distance learning programs of the state, offered by different colleges and universities. The West Bengal Directorate of Distance Education started operations in the year 1994 when only the Vidyasagar University provided correspondence courses in the master’s level. Today, both bachelor’s level studies and diploma courses are taught as part of the distance learning syllabus in the top colleges and universities of West Bengal.
The chief advantage of pursuing studies through distance learning in West Bengal is the cost effectiveness of the courses. Fees for distance learning programs are subsequently less than that of regular study programs. Moreover, every institute reportedly offers adequate study material to the students on a regular basis, thus ensuring quality education. Distance learning education also allows students from remote villages of West Bengal to pursue higher studies.
