Education Abroad

Students from India travel to foreign countries in an increasing number to enroll in higher education institutes. In the last academic session 2010 – 2011, more than 1,50,000 Indian youths had traveled to another country to take admission in colleges and universities there. The US is the most preferred choice for higher studies for Indian students, followed by the UK, Canada and Australia. A survey has revealed that the maximum number of foreign students that the US receives comprise Indians.

Popular Countries for Studying Abroad

The number of Indian students in the US went up from 94,563 in 2009 – 2010 to 1,03,260 in 2010 – 2011. Most Indian students in the US take admission in colleges and universities located in the mid west or in the east coast regions of the country. The scholarships offered by higher education institutes in the US to foreign students is a major attraction for admission.

Indians generally opt for postgraduate studies in colleges and universities of the UK. In the year 2010, more than 20,000 Indian students were enrolled in UK universities. The entry process for studying in UK is streamlined by the governments and therefore easy for Indians. There are also several part time jobs that the students can choose from.

There has been a recent rise in the number of Indian students in Canada. There were only 3,152 Indians studying in Canada in the year 2008. the number has shot up to more than 13,000 in the year 2011. The low tuition fees, low cost of living and lenient visa rules for Indian students traveling to Canada for studies are the chief reasons for the sudden rise in number.

The number of Indian students in Australia’s colleges and universities has increased because the country provides a variety ofprofessional programs to choose from. But enrolling in public institutes rather than private institutes is better in Australia. The living expenditure in the country may also be on the higher side, but there are ample employment opportunities.
