GATE or the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is jointly conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (for the National Coordination Board – GATE of the Government of India’s Department of Higher Education) and the Indian Institute of Science which is located in Bangaluru. The zonal administering institutes have been listed below:

Important Dates and Parameters:
Exam Date The online examination will be conducted on the 29th of January, 2012. The offline examination is scheduled to take place on the 12th of February, 2012.
Exam Time Online: 9:00 am to 12:00 noon (Architecture and Planning, Geology and Geophysics, Textile Engineering and Fiber Science) 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Agricultural Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Mining Engineering) Offline: 9:00 am to 12:00 noon (Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology) 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Chemistry, Life Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Instrumentation Engineering)
Fees The General and OBC candidates will have to pay an application fee of INR 1,000 and the candidates belonging to the SC/ST/Specially abled categories will have to pay INR 500.

Registration Closing Date 17th October, 2011
Eligibility Criteria: Age and Education Candidates who are graduate degree holders in Technology/Engineering/Architecture and postgraduate degree holders in Computer Applications/Mathematics/Statistics/Science from a recognized university will be considered eligible to apply for GATE. Final year students of the above courses will be able to apply.
Admit Card Availability The admit cards for the examination can be downloaded from the zonal websites for GATE. The candidates will be able to download the same from 2nd January, 2012 onwards.
Mode of Registration For the GATE 2012, the candidates will have to register online through the official website of GATE (websites of Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Technology).
