Higher education in Germany is the chief responsibility of the state governments; the federal government does not play much role in managing and controlling the education system of Germany. Universities in Germany are technologically equipped and provide modern learning atmospheres for both domestic and international students. The variety of courses available and the well qualified faculty are the chief attractions for international students to apply in undergraduate and postgraduate programs in German universities.
Presently, there are 312 higher education institutes recognized by the state in Germany. The pattern of examination followed in universities in Germany is the same for every university. The classes are divided into two semesters in one academic year; examinations are held at the end of each semester. One course requires at least eight semesters to be completed; which means that a student has to study for at least four years in a university in Germany to complete a degree course. In Germany, university is referred to by the term ‘Fachhochschule’.
Admission to a Fachhochschule is direct, based on the marks obtained in the Fachabitur or Abitur test. This certification is compulsory for admission to a university. Failing to submit this certificate, an applicant must sit for the ‘Begabtenprufung’ or aptitude test that consists of a written test and an oral examination. If a candidate fails to perform well in this aptitude test, he is granted admission to a German university only if he has received vocational training or has professional experience of three years.
With the advancement recorded in higher education in Germany, the number of students has tripled three times since the World War II.
