Can Ahmedabad be the Education Capital of India?

Since the pre-independence era, Ahmedabad has been an important education hub for higher studies in India. Its history stretches back to the Indian independence movement. The Gujarat Vidyapith, which is a major university in Ahmedabad, was founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920 to oppose the British colonial education system. It was established as a national university without a government charter. The total number of students in the university in 1923 was 30,000. Today, it is one of the national universities of India with a charter from the government of India.

Many internationally known figures such as Chetan Bhagat, Narendra Modi, Ajay Banga and Bharat Desai did their schooling or graduation from Ahmedabad. With a literacy rate of 86.65%, the city has some of the top schools and colleges in the country. 21 schools, 7 universities, 10 MBA colleges, 3 engineering colleges, 4 medical colleges, 2 pharmacy colleges, 4 advertising colleges and 23 science colleges of Ahmedabad are popular in the entire country.

    • The Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association (ATIRA) is the largest industrial research institute for textile and allied industries in India. Established in 1947, the institute currently has 146 member units from both India and abroad.
  • Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) is a premier research institute for space and allied sciences. It was founded in 1947 by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai and is known as the “Cradle of Space Sciences in India”.

Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM A)

Established in 1961, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad was the second IIM to be set up in India. It was ranked at the 11th position amongst the best business schools in the world in Financial Times Global MBA Rankings 2011. The institute achieved first rank in the top 50 business schools 2011 ranking by Hindustan Times.

IIM Ahmedabad’s post graduate program in Agribusiness Management was ranked 1st in the field of “Agribusiness / Food Industry Management” by Eduniversal in 2011.

National Institute of Design (NID)

National Institute of Design (NID), which was established in 1961 in Ahmedabad, is a premier design school in India. NID is ranked among the top design schools in the world by Business Week.

Gujarat University

Established in 1949 in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat University is the largest university in the state of Gujarat. The university has more than 250 colleges affiliated to it and provides education to more than 200,000 students. It has been given a B++ ranking by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is recognized as a premier university in India.

Mudra Institute of Communications

The Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA) was established in 1991. It is one of the most prestigious institutes offering communication management programs in India. The institute has collaborations with many international schools such as ESCEM, School of Business and Management, France; Florida State University, USA; University of Westminster, UK etc.

Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India

The Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI) was set up in Ahmedabad in 1983. The institute is sponsored by the financial institutions like the IDBI Bank Ltd., IFCI Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd. and State Bank of India (SBI). It was the first entrepreneurship institute to be established in India. EDI has helped in setting up 12 state-level entrepreneurship development institutes in India. It has also set up Entrepreneurship Development Centres in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Nirma University of Science and Technology

Established in 1994, Nirma University of Science and Technology is the oldest private university in Gujarat. It is popularly known as Nirma University and has 7 institutes under it – Institute of Technology, Institute of Management, Institute of Diploma Studies, Institute of Pharmacy, Institute of Science and the Institute of Law.

The Institute of Technology was ranked 19 in the CSR-GHRDC Engineering Colleges Survey 2011 and ranked 30 in the Outlook India Best Engineering colleges 2011.

Its Institute of Management was also ranked 19 in the CSR-GHRDC’s B-School Survey of 2011.

Latest Events in the Educational Sector

Some of the latest events in the educational scenario of Ahmedabad are as follows:

  • With effect from June, 2012 the pupils of standards VI to VIII will get a complete new resource of study materials. The textbooks for the first time would be prepared by a team of internationally acclaimed experts and nearly 300 teachers from different subjects. This step is initiated by the state education department, in order to bring an improved approach to the system of education amongst the students of primary, middle, and junior sections. So far, 144 textbooks have been prepared under the supervision of Subeer Shukla, the Union HRD (Human Resource Department) Ministry consultant, who has successfully prepared syllabus for 17 states in the country along with Tanzania and Bangladesh.
  • Three projects have been undertaken by the Gujarat Government, in order to improve the education system in the state, which are – Balbhog Yojana (A midday meal system in order to improve the percentage of students coming from economically weaker families), Kanya Kelavani Yojana (to promote percentage of female literacy), and Karmayogi Abhiyan (to train and educate government employees).
  • Since 2003, the Gujarat Government has been arranging Global Investors’ Summit, a biennial event with an aim to bring together investors, opinion makers, corporations, and business leaders. DECU (Development and Educational Communication Unit) has been trying to implement socio-economic evaluation and research to promote education, based on satellite-based communications. These include – Tele-Medicine, Tele-Education, Satcom Applications, and Gramsat Program.
  • BPA (Blind People’s Association) with a joint collaboration with ERDC (Education Research Development Centre) has successfully developed modern technology for the visually impaired community.
