Education in Jharkhand

The literacy rate in Jharkhand is 67.63%, the male literacy rate being 78.45% and that of female being 56.21% (according to Census 2011). Jharkhand was earlier a part of Bihar. It assumed the status of a separate state in the year 2000 and is known as Jharkhand since then. It is India’s 28th state.

Jharkhand comprises the industrial belt and is one of the most industrialized areas in the country. Education has always been a priority in the state and some of the reputed seats of learning like Indian School of Mines and Birla Institute of Technology can be found in this state.

The state of Jharkhand has formed the Jharkhand Academic Council and Jharkhand Education Project Council to promote and foster higher education in the state.

Jharkhand Education Project Council 

The Jharkhand Education Project Council popularly known as JEPC has been entrusted with the responsibility of fostering elementary education in the state. Vital education programs like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, National Program of Education for Girls at Elementary Level or NPEGEL, and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya or KGBV are taken care of by this council.

Jharkhand Academic Council 

JAC or Jharkhand Academic Council was set up so that it could look into matters related to organizing examinations for Sanskrit, Madrasa, Secondary as well as Intermediate levels.

The council is also responsible for working out the course structure for these examinations. Education system in Jharkhand 

A child 5 years and above of age is eligible for enrolling into a school in Jharkhand. The Jharkhand education system follows several tiers- schools, college, and university.

The schools in Jharkhand are either affiliated to ICSE or Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, Central Board of Secondary Education, or the State Board. In case of ICSE and CBSE, the medium of instruction is English and in case of schools affiliated to the State Board, the language used for imparting education is Hindi.

The government of Jharkhand ensures that compulsory and free primary education is made available to children up to 14 years.

The 10+2 education system is followed in the state. A student can continue with 3 years degree programs. Primary education in Jharkhand 

Statistical data has proved that around 95% of children between ages 6 and 11 are studying in primary schools in the state. This is in sharp contrast to the 56% enrollment rate way back in the year 1993 and 1994.

There are few identifiable factors that are being worked upon by the Jharkhand government. They are minimizing poor attendance, non enrollment, and school drop outs.

Education for non resident students

Students who are non resident of Jharkhand are offered ample opportunity to pursue their career in this state that is rich in natural resources.

Many colleges assign seats to outstation candidates. There is a particular percentage of students to whom seats are offered. These seats may have to be filled depending on the scores obtained in the competitive entrance examinations.

Education for Foreign students -DASA Scheme 

As per the DASA or Direct Admission to Students Abroad scheme, there are few well known seats of learning that offer an opportunity to NRI students. Two such institutes in the state of Jharkhand include National Institute of Technology or NIT Jamshedpur and National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology in Ranchi Jharkhand’s capital city.

The DASA scheme introduced by the government makes it possible for innumerable foreign students to pursue academic programs in the field of engineering and technology in India.
