Technical education has always played an instrumental role in molding the economy of a particular place. Similarly, the engineering colleges in Meghalaya (polytechnic institutes) have shaped the economy of this state too. Although the state does not have too many technical institutes, nevertheless, that hasn’t deterred the aspiring engineers from aiming for the skies.

As per orders from the Government of Meghalaya, new polytechnic institutes were set up a couple of years ago. Every year as many as 100 students seek admission into these technical institutes. In addition to the regular engineering branches, the need for agriculture engineering has also been felt and setting up a college catering to this sphere of technical education is also on the agenda.

Efforts are also being made to impart quality education in the technical field so that the state has a good number of useful and skilled human resources.

The government of India has sanctioned around rupees 12.30 crores under the plan “Submission on Polytechnics under Coordinated Action for Skill Development”. This is a one-time financial assistance that the government has extended to the state government for bringing about improvement in the field of technical education. Measures are also being taken to introduce new courses that are emerging in the technical fields.

The Government is also encouraging to set up centers of higher education under PPP or Public Private Partnership model.

1.Jowai Polytechnic

Jowai Polytechnic was founded in the year 2002. The institute was set up by the Meghalaya Government with financial aid from World Bank under plan – Third Technician Education III Project. It is not a degree engineering college but offers engineering Diploma to the students who have qualified their Secondary School Leaving Certificate of Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education or equivalent with minimum 45% marks in science and mathematics. For students belonging to Scheduled Tribe and Schedule Caste, it is 40% in both the subjects.

Students seeking admission into this college should be of 21 years or less. It is a year less for students qualified in 12+ examination and 3 years less for the SC/ST candidates.

The institute is affiliated to Meghalaya State Council for Technical Education and the academic program is recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The main aim of setting up the institute is to prepare the students to work at supervisory levels in private, public, and government sectors.

The courses offered by the institute include diploma courses in Costume Design and Garment Technology, Architectural Assistantship, and Automobile Engineering.

2.Shillong Engineering and Management College

Shillong Engineering and Management College (SEMC) was set up in the year 1999 at Shillong. The college shifted in 2002 to Jorabat. This engineering college in Meghalya is run by NEITED or North Eastern India Trust for Education and Development which is a chartable trust.

The main aim of setting up the institute is to offer quality education to the aspiring engineering and management students who are better equipped to get employed in private as well as public sector offices. The college is affiliated to NEHU or North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. The academic program is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The bachelor degree is spread over 4 years divided into 8 semesters. The courses offered by the institute include B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

3.Regional Institute of Science and Technology

Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) is one of the well known engineering colleges in Meghalaya. The B.Tech study programs are recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi Ministry of Human Resources Department Government of India. The college is affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. In fact NEHU is the first Central University in North East part of India. Owing to the large area it is built on, it is popularly known as Techno City.

The infrastructural facilities of the college are good. There is a healthcare center taking care of students’ needs. Extracurricular activities are plenty so a student can engage himself in various recreational activities. A gymnasium, departmental store, and adequate transportation facilities make the college one of the most sought after engineering colleges in Meghalaya.

4.Shillong Polytechnic

Shillong Polytechnic was founded in the year 1965. The institute offers Diploma courses in Engineering for students who have qualified in their HSLC examination. The engineering institute has earned ISO 9001-2000 Certification in the year 2007.

The institute was set up to educate students and to prepare them for employment in rural areas in the state. The Government of India extended Community Polytechnic Scheme to this college for preparing a student not just from the education point of view but also make them socially responsible.

Admission into this institute is secured by fulfilling certain conditions. The student wishing to admission into the institute should be a resident of Meghalaya (permanent), should have qualified in 10+ examinations or HSSLC examination with 45% and 50% respectively.

The age of the applicant should be less than 21 years. It is 20 for students who have qualified in 10+2 examination and 18 years for students belonging to ST/SC category.

A candidate has to be medically fit and the minimum height should be 1.5 meters. It is 1.3 meters for people belonging to the hills.
