Introduction :

International Center for Gandhian Studies and Research (ICGSR),New Delhi stands on a sprawling 36 acres of land beside the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. The campus came into existence in the year 1969 with the purpose of commemorating the centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi. The campus was transformed into the International Center for Gandhian Studies and Research (ICGSR) with the purpose of conducting research activities and nurturing the basic philosophy of Gandhiji. ICGSR is a part of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Smriti which spreads the vision, philosophy and teachings from the life of Gandhiji through various social, educational and cultural programs emphasizing upon the contemporary relevance of his thoughts. The ICGSR has been enlisted as a To be Deemed University by the UGC

Programs offered by ICGSR :

  • Gandhism in Schools :The programs offered by the institute aims to propagate the Gandhian philosophy among women, youth and children and helps them to imbibe the ethos and values of Ganhi’s philosophy. The Gandhian concept of Nai Talim means extending the education to schools and the amalgamation of art, health and education.
  • Gandhi Media Literacy Program :The essence of the program is to help children in acquiring the following points :
    • Realization about media.
    • In depth understanding of the media.
    • Supporting the noble aims of the media.
    • Opinion building about the media.
    • Accessibility to the media to propagate their message.
    • Dissemination of Gandhian Philosophy to women.

    The program highlights the following points :

    • Emancipation of women
    • Workshops to advocate the importance of a girl child.
    • Prevention of violence against women.

Programs to strengthen the global peace process :

The center has been successful in creating a network between the United Nations and the Security Council to initiate the peace process in a global scenario. The Gandhian philosophy of non- violence is also inflicted upon the young generations

Programs for making women self-sufficient : The International Centre for Gandhi Studies and Research undertakes programme for the upliftment of women in the society. It has organised a regional workshop on promoting girl child friendly society and also launched a youth campaign against violence on women.

Programs in Champaran :

The 150 girls and women were imparted the basic tenets of print and radio production which enabled them to attain mastery over the subtle nuances of communication and writing thereby uplifting the rural scenario in Champaran .

Programs in Tihar Jail :

The programs impart the basic doctrines of Gandhiji’s philosophy for rectification and rehabilitation of prisoners .

Facilities at ICGSR :

Various workshops are conducted on socially relevant issues by eminent social activists, government personnels and scholars to create awareness on various issues like water pollution, water conservation, and initiation of global peace process. The socially conscious activists adhering strictly to the Gandhian dogma provide an ideal platform for inculcating the Gandhian ideologies in an individual and promote universal solidarity and brotherhood.
