Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad was established in 1960 with the objective of conducting art exhibitions at state and national levels. The central and state governments and the UNESCO provides financial and other support to the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad. Recently, another art school called the Chitrakala Vidyalaya has been included under the aegis of the Parishad. The Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad is growing at a break-neck speed and is regarded as the hub for connoisseurs of fine art .The institute patronizes learning of the professional courses through a wide array of subjects related to Fine Arts.

The institute has very good faculty members and the best studios for graphics and sculpture. The art departments, the galleries, the studios the exhibitions and the best of the teachers provide a perfect milieu for the budding artists to learn the subtle nuances and intricacies of fine arts in this college. The college has a strength of 350 students and 25 teachers. The Chitrakala Institute of Advanced Studies has 50 post graduate students and seven doctorate students. In 1993 Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) was founded with the help of the Parishad to preserve the works of heritage art and make people conscious about the growing importance of art in our society.
