Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Gwalior was established by the government of India as the National College of Physical Education in the year 1957. The university was named after the valiant queen of Jhansi, Rani Lakshmibai, who laid down her life fighting with the British rulers, for independence of her state.
The main aim of the university is to improve the status of physical education through undergraduate and post graduate degrees and diplomas. The university promotes participation of the mass in sports and physical education and offers academic and professional leadership to other academies in the field of sports.
