The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra earlier known as Regional Engineering College (REC) Kurukshetra is a Deemed University under the University Grants Commission (UGG) Act. This college of engineering was established in 1962 and became a deemed university in the year 2002 and thus acquired its new name i.e. National Institute of Technology. It is one of the most reputed engineering institutes in the country and receives financial assistance for educational purposes from the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India.
Academic activities in the institute got underway in the year 1965 – 1966 with about 120 students who were enrolled for the engineering course of five years duration. From 1985-1986 onwards, the B.Sc. degrees in the engineering courses were changed to B.Tech degrees for 4 years which the institute currently follows.
The institute aims to educate its students on the values of life besides training them to achieve excellence in the field of academics. Research activities, intensive study and innovative methods of teaching are a part of the grooming process in this institute. The institute also strives to provide a number of quality engineering courses and programs at the undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral levels. In order to inculcate a feeling of national integration, patriotism and brotherhood among the students, candidates are taken from all parts of India irrespective of any social or religious barriers.

Admission procedure at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra:
Like in all other national institutes of engineering in the country, admission to NIT Kurukshetra, in the undergraduate course, can be taken by qualifying in an entrance examination, known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. For post-graduate or M.Tech. courses the entrance is through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering better known as GATE.
- Hostels : There are five hostels for male undergraduate students, one for males undergoing the M.Tech courses and two hostels for female undergraduate and post graduate students.
- Health Center : The institute houses a health center which looks after the medical needs of the students. The center is well equipped with all modern equipments and facilities.
- Hospital : Medicines are provided and treatment is done free of cost to all students, teaching and non-teaching staffs of the institute.
