National institute of Industrial Engineering or NITIE, as it is better known, was set up by the government of India in collaboration with International Labor Organization (ILO) in 1963. The primary objective behind the establishment of NITIE was to teach materials management, work-studies, inventory control, shop floor management and personal management. Over the years NITIE has established itself as one of the best management institutes in India.
Facilities at NITIE:
The National Institute of Industrial Engineering is equipped with all necessary facilities. NITIE library has more than 54000 books, 200 current periodicals and more than 8000 back volumes of journals.
Some of its programmes like PGDIM, PGDISEM, PGDIE are residential and students are provided with well-furnished hostel facilities. It also offers enough opportunities for recreational activities as one can avail the courts/fields to play football, volleyball, basketball and other sports. The computer center and Lab & Research center of the Institutes are also well equipped to meet the needs of the students.
Courses at NITIE:
The NITIE offers three post Graduate programmes and one Fellow programme. These programmes are-
- Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management, PGDIM
- P G Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environmental Management
- Fellow Programme
Admission to Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE):
Students are admitted to the 90 seats of this course of NITIE on the basis of Group percentile score, Group discussion, and interviews. For admission to this course candidates need to have first class degree and a minimum GATE score of 85 percentile. Apart from SC/ST candidates seats are also reserved for Industry sponsored, QIP and defence services candidates.
Admission to Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management, PGDIM:
For admission to the PGDIM programme of NITIE candidates need to have a first division (5% less for SC/ST candidates) in any branch of Engineering/Technology or equivalent. However candidates who are appearing in the final year of the qualifying exam are also eligible to apply for the course. Students are admitted to this course through the score they secured in the Common Admission Test (CAT), group discussions and interviews. The application forms of NITIE are made available in the month of September. The form can be downloaded from the NITIE website.
Admission to P G Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environmental Management:
The admission procedure of this programme at NITIE is same as that of PGDIM.
Admission to Fellow Programme:
Research is encouraged at NITIE in the areas of Organization Behavior, Personnel Management, Marketing, Ergonomics, BPR, TQM, TPM, Reliability Management, Operations Research, Information Technology, SCM, Production Management, Finance & Accounting and Environmental Management. For admission to this fellow programme candidates need to have a master’s degree with at least first division in Engineering/Science/Business Management or administration/ Commerce/Social Sciences or Humanities. Candidates are selected to the programme on the basis of their academic qualification and experience, seminar on selected areas of Research and interview.

Application form and prospectus for different programmes of study can be obtained by sending a demand draft of Rs. 1000/- (Rs.500/- for SC/ST candidates) drawn in favor of NITIE, Mumbai and payable at SBI, Vihar Lake, Mumbai 400087, code no. 9055 along with caste certificates and six self addressed stickers indicating the name of the programme to Asst.
